Buying a Used Ultrasound Machine: 10-Point Checklist

A used or refurbished ultrasound machine can deliver excellent image quality at a fraction of the cost of new. But not all used systems are equal. Use this checklist to make sure you buy a system that suits your clinical work and will stay reliable.

1. Match the system to your clinical needs

Cardiology, general imaging, women's health and point-of-care each suit different platforms. For example, the GE Vivid S6 and GE Vivid E9 are cardiac systems, while the Philips Affiniti 70G is a general imaging system.

2. Check exactly which probes are included

Probes can account for a large part of a system's value. Confirm the model of every probe included and make sure they cover your applications (for example convex, linear, phased array, endocavity or TEE).

3. Test every probe

Ask for evidence that each probe has been tested for element dropout, lens damage, cable damage and image artefacts.

4. Confirm the software version

The software version affects image quality, available features and compatibility with newer probes. Ask for the exact version installed.

5. Check licensed options

Features such as elastography, contrast imaging, strain, 3D/4D and DICOM connectivity are often licensed separately. Confirm what is enabled on the system you are buying.

6. Look at the physical condition

Inspect the monitor, touchscreen, keyboard, trackball, cart, wheels and probe holders. Ask for recent photos or a video demonstration.

7. Ask for sample images

Recent images on a phantom or volunteer give you confidence in the system's image quality.

8. Check DICOM and connectivity

Make sure the system can send images to your PACS and print or export as you need.

9. Understand the warranty

Find out what the warranty covers (system, probes or both), how long it lasts, and how repairs are handled.

10. Plan for service and support

Choose a supplier who can provide training, servicing, spare parts and replacement probes in the future.
