How Much Does a Used CT Scanner Cost? Pre-Owned Prices with Warranty

Quick answer: A used (pre-owned) CT scanner with warranty, supplied as a complete installed project, typically costs £60,000–£67,000 for a 16-slice, £82,000–£90,000 for a 64-slice and £97,000–£105,000 for a 128-slice system. These turnkey prices include the tested scanner, warranty, site survey, lead shielding design, packing, shipping, installation, calibration and applications training. Import duties and local taxes are extra. The scanner model, its age, X-ray tube condition and software options move the price within each range.

We are Rising Medical Technologies. We have installed many used and refurbished CT scanners and MRI systems for hospitals and diagnostic centres across East, West and Central Africa, as well as the Middle East and the UK. The prices and advice in this guide come from those real projects, not from brochures.

Used, refurbished or pre-owned: what is the difference?

  • Used "as is": sold in the condition it was removed from the hospital, usually without testing, warranty or installation. Cheapest on paper, but the riskiest purchase.

  • Refurbished / pre-owned with warranty: professionally de-installed, inspected, repaired where needed, tested and calibrated, then supplied with a warranty, installation and training. This is what we supply and what the prices in this guide refer to.

An "as is" CT scanner can look like a bargain until you add shipping, a missing part, a weak tube, an engineer visit and weeks of downtime. For a hospital that needs the scanner to work from day one, a warrantied pre-owned system is almost always the cheaper option over its life.

Used CT scanner prices by slice count

  • 16-slice CT: £60,000 – £67,000 installed. Ideal for general diagnostic imaging in clinics and district hospitals: head, chest, abdomen, spine and trauma.

  • 64-slice CT: £82,000 – £90,000 installed. The workhorse for busy hospitals, including CT angiography, cardiac and trauma imaging. Our GE Discovery CT750 HD 64-slice is a good example.

  • 128-slice CT: £97,000 – £105,000 installed. For high-volume departments and advanced cardiac and vascular work.

What does the warranty cover?

Every pre-owned CT scanner we supply comes with a warranty. The length and cover depend on the system, its age and the service package agreed, so we confirm them in writing in each quotation. When comparing quotes, always ask:

  • How long is the warranty, and does it start at handover rather than at shipping?

  • Does it cover parts and engineer labour and travel?

  • Is the X-ray tube covered, and on what terms? The tube is the most expensive single part of a CT scanner.

  • Who provides support locally, and how quickly can an engineer reach your site?

  • What service contract is available after the warranty ends?

What affects the price of a used CT scanner?

1. Slice count and detector

More slices means faster scans and more clinical applications, and a higher price. Most new imaging centres in Africa start with a 16- or 64-slice system.

2. Manufacturer and model

GE HealthCare, Siemens Healthineers, Philips and Canon (formerly Toshiba) all hold their value differently. Popular platforms with good spare parts availability, such as the GE Discovery and Optima series and the Siemens SOMATOM range, are easier to support long term.

3. X-ray tube condition

Tube usage is one of the biggest price factors. A scanner with a newer or recently replaced tube costs more but can save a large replacement bill later. We report tube condition in every quotation.

4. Age and software

Year of manufacture, software version and licensed options such as cardiac packages, dose reduction and advanced reconstruction change the value of two scanners that look identical.

5. Destination and site

Shipping distance, port, road access, crane hire and the amount of room preparation needed all affect the final project cost.

What is included in our turnkey price

  • Tested, calibrated pre-owned CT scanner with warranty

  • Site survey, room layout and lead shielding design

  • De-installation, crating, packing and shipping

  • Engineer-supervised unloading, rigging and positioning

  • Installation, calibration, commissioning and image quality testing

  • Applications training for radiographers

Not included: import duties and local taxes, local building works, a backup generator or new air conditioning if the site needs them. We list these clearly so there are no surprises. Read our CT scanner room requirements guide to plan the room.

Why engineer supervision protects your investment

A CT gantry is heavy and precisely aligned. On many projects the biggest avoidable risk is not the scanner itself but rough handling when the container is unloaded and the equipment is stored. Every CT we install is unloaded, moved and positioned under the supervision of our own engineers. Read how we manage this in our guide to installing a CT scanner in Africa.

Running costs after installation

Budget for a service contract after the warranty, eventual tube replacement, quality assurance testing, power protection (stabiliser, UPS and generator) and air conditioning maintenance. We give clients a realistic picture of these costs before they buy.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a used CT scanner cost?

A used CT scanner with warranty, fully installed, typically costs £60,000–£67,000 for 16-slice, £82,000–£90,000 for 64-slice and £97,000–£105,000 for 128-slice, before import duties and local taxes.

Does a pre-owned CT scanner come with a warranty?

Ours do. The length and cover depend on the system and are confirmed in writing in your quotation.

Is a used CT scanner reliable?

Yes, when it is professionally refurbished, tested, installed by experienced engineers and supported with spare parts and service. Most problems with used CT come from untested "as is" purchases and poor handling during shipping.

Can you install a used CT scanner in Africa?

Yes. We have installed many CT and MRI systems across East, West and Central Africa, including shipping, rigging, shielding design, installation and training.

How long does it take to supply and install a used CT scanner?

It depends on shipping time and how ready the room is. With the room prepared, installation, calibration and training usually take a few weeks after delivery.
